WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COACHING AND COUNSELING?
We are licensed counselors who also offers coaching services to individuals and couples who are not Florida or Indiana residents (where in-office and telehealth therapy is provided). Coaching sessions are not meant to be a substitute for ongoing therapeutic work. We always encourages people to seek help from a local professional, if available.

How coaching & counseling are different:
As part of the coaching process, we may recommend interaction with someone other than ourselves. This may be another counselor or an individual/couple we believes will provide additional help in your specific situation. You will always know this ahead of time, not “surprised” to find yourself interacting with someone other than Tim or Sharon.

How coaching & counseling are alike:
- In both, we focus on helping couples and individuals work through their issues in ways that direct them toward healing.
- In both, we invest in knowing our clients and help them gain insight into current patterns and clarity of future change.
- In both, we direct recommended steps toward change, often in the form of exercises to be completed outside of sessions.
How coaching & counseling are different:
- Coaching services are intended as an alternative for people outside of Florida (or outside driving distance to the Orlando area).
- Coaching focuses on our advice regarding your current situation, whereas counseling usually has a longer view of target goals and outcomes.
- Coaching is conversation with a professional. We do not keep a the same kind of files on you.
- Coaching sessions are not reimbursed by insurance.
- Coaching focuses on advice, education, and skill-building to help an individual or couple move toward change. We will not diagnose you. We will usually not work as extensively to explore past issues (family of origin, etc.) or work to uncover root causes of behavior patterns. If issues being addressed go beyond the scope of coaching (especially if there is need for in-office therapy or the use of tools appropriate for counseling), we will recommend that you seek counseling instead.

More people are making use of telehealth (video) option for a number of good reasons:
- It's quick & easy. You don't have to fight traffic to get to your appointment.
- It's convenient. You can join your session from your home, your office, or anywhere with a decent internet connection. In couples counseling, the partners can even be in separate locations.
- It's personal. It allows for real-time interaction between client and therapist.
- It's private. No need to show up at an office to interact with a front desk or people in a waiting room.
- It's safe. If personal distancing is important for health reasons, video/phone sessions allow you to get help in whatever environment is comortable to you.

ARE VIDEO SESSIONS SECURE? COMPLICATED? RELIABLE?
Video sessions are secure and confidential (HIPPA compliant). When you schedule an appointment, the link to your video session will be sent to you and will also be available in your private client portal. For complete information & help, download the Telehealth Guide (PDF).
As long as you have a good internet connection, you can use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to join the video session. For Couples: Both may share the same device, or each may join the video session using separate tablets or computers (since a phone screen is likely not large enough to show all participants).
We rarely have problems with video sessions. When we do, it's usually do to a poor internet connection. In those circumstances, turning off the video feature will allow for an audio-only session. These problems can be easily avoided by making sure your device isn't running other programs at the same time and that your internet connection isn't being used heavily by other programs or devices. (For example, trying to conduct a video session on the same WiFi service that is also being use to stream video, download content, update services, or play games at the same time will likely cause interference.)
